Big Magic

Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear

“The universe buries strange jewels deep with us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them.”

Ehhh…well…this wasn’t my favorite read. There were some interesting points and I think it was good, but there were also points that I personally disagreed with and I didn’t think the book went in depth enough to justify some of Gilbert’s points. It’s a very short and easy read, but it’s just a book that seems to be written for the author’s personal justification rather than with readers in mind. I also felt that Gilbert made some assumptions without stating them as assumptions. For instance, she claimed that writers such as Harper Lee and F. Scott Fitzgerald didn’t continue writing after their big successes in literature due to fear and inability to top what they had already achieved. Maybe this is true, but maybe it’s not and a pet peeve that I developed in business school is when an assumption goes stated without being announced. Overall, I was underwhelmed, but it wasn’t terrible.
